Totalfinder update11/24/2023 Unfortunately, as explained in my rant about things that suck about Mac, TotalFinder no longer is compatible with Mac 10.11+. Okay so first, technically TotalFinder will work on OS X 10.11 (aka, El Capitan), but only after disabling OS X’s built-in System Integrity Protection:įortunately there are plenty of decent alternatives to TotalFinder, even if you’re running the latest version of Mac OS X. System Integrity Protection (SIP) is a new security feature introduced by Apple. That’s good, but unfortunately it prevents TotalFinder from augmenting Finder. In other words: El Capitan’s SIP breaks TotalFinder. So to run TotalFinder on Mac OS X, you need to disable SIP, which obviously is not recommended by Apple. Personally, I don’t mind hacking stuff, but these days there just isn’t enough time to fiddle with OS mods, especially where potential security implications are concerned. So several months ago, I bit the bullet, removed TotalFinder, and began searching for a suitable replacement. As mentioned, the good news is that there is no shortage of decent alternatives to TotalFinder. The not-so-good news is that none of them, in my opinion, are as refined and intuitive as the one and only TotalFinder. ForkLift 2 – Free Trial (purchase from $29.95).įiles for OS X – Free “lite” version (purchase full from $24.99).Disk Order – Free Trial (purchase from $24.95).DCommander – Free Trial (purchase from $19.95).CRAX Commander – Free Demo (purchase for $19.99).Commander One – Free (Pro version available from $29.95).That said, here is my growing list of apps that enhance and extend Mac’s native Finder functionality (presented in alphabetical order).Path Finder – Free Trial (purchase from $36, see Update below*).The degree of extra functionality provided by each of these apps varies, but hopefully the list will enable you to “find” an ideal replacement for TotalFinder. Of these apps, I’ve already grabbed a copy of Path Finder (see Update below*) and Unclutter. It took awhile to learn all of the settings provided by Path Finder, but I think it’s gonna be sufficient going forward. Unclutter turned out to be something altogether different than what I was expecting, but it’s still pretty cool so I’ll leave it on the list. *Update: I used path finder app for quite awhile, but ended up ditching it due to completely terrible support. I mean, they literally ignored and even deleted my posts asking for help. And I was a paying customer! So just based on the way they treat their own customers, not to mention all of the quirky weird bugs and having to pay for the app more than once (like with almost every upgrade), I can no longer recommend Path Finder. “Find” something better, you’ll be better off for it. What did I miss? Drop a comment if you know of any other good Finder-fixer-uppers, and feel free to share your experience with any of the apps listed above.I hate my work-provided MacBook SO. I begged them to give me a ThinkPad with Linux instead, and it's been a litany of problems in the three months I've been using it. Malbec wine grapes11/24/2023 I am thinking here of such as names as Caro (a joint venture between Château Lafite-Rothschild and Nicolás Catena), Catena Zapata, Cheval des Andes (a joint venture between Chateau Cheval Blanc and LVMH's Terrazas de los Andes which already makes extremely good Malbec at various different levels itself), and Michel Rolland's own extensive range of Argentine wines such as Yacochuya from Salta in the north (with the Etchart family) and the Clos de los Siete project high up in the Andes near Vista Flores with various, mainly French partners.Īncient Malbec vines are a significant component of candidates for the world's highest vineyards in Salta province, at Swiss art collector Donald Hess's Colomé vineyard near Los Molinos and on Tacuil, the neighbouring farm which still belongs to Raúl Davilos, the man who once owned Colomé. It is significant that so many of those now trying to make luxury wines in Argentina have either based their extremely expensive blends on Malbec or at the very least incorporate it to a significant degree. Examples of Malbec from some of Argentina's cooler wine regions such as Río Negro as far south as Patagonia manage a particularly appetising combination of juicy sweetness and a certain vigorous, sappy character. Malbec can be planted at slightly higher altitudes than the late ripening Cabernet Sauvignon – in fact it retains its acidity and aroma better that way. Mendoza is Argentine Malbec's homeland and within it the Luján de Cuyo district just south of the leafy city of Mendoza was relatively early identified as Malbec's spiritual home. With its high levels of alcohol and fruit, Argentine Malbec is not difficult to like. Some Malbecs are made for long ageing but generally the wines have much softer tannins than Argentine Cabernet Sauvignon, for example. Good Argentine Malbec, and there is a great deal of it for Argentina is one of the world's most prolific wine producers, is deeply coloured, spicily rich with an exuberant juiciness and has as a trademark an almost velvety texture. This was unfortunately not in time to stop so many vines being pulled out that Malbec was for a time overtaken as Argentina's most planted noble grape by the speciality known there as Bonarda however. In the 1980s Argentina's vineyards, particularly those in the dominant wine region Mendoza, were awash with Malbec and the Argentine wine industry was rather ashamed of the fact, assiduously pulling it out in favour of something more obviously fashionable such as Cabernet Sauvignon.īut the particular strain of Malbec that was taken to Argentina, it is thought in the mid 19th century and possibly via the cuttings imported into Chile from Bordeaux, has adapted itself so spectacularly to local conditions that foreign visitors to Argentina's winelands on the heavily-irrigated eastern flanks of the Andes had by the 1990s convinced the Argentine wine industry that Malbec was the jewel in its crown. But the fact remains that a great deal of Cahors is pretty rustic stuff, often a little thin and animal on the mid-palate.Īpart from the fact that they are both red, one can hardly recognise a relationship between most of the Malbec produced in Cahors and that produced in its modern home, Argentina. There has also been a recent influx of money and ambition into Cahors, from foreigners whether they be from New York or Paris such as the family behind the Cartier empire which is determined to produce in Le Pigeonnier a Cahors worthy of cult prices. Certainly wines made here rather than down by the river bank seem to have the greatest potential for ageing, especially when blended with Tannat rather than Merlot grapes. The regulations for Cahors stipulate a minimum of 70% of Malbec/Auxerrois/Côt and the vine seems to do best on the topsoils of the arid causses, the limestone plateaux above the river Garonne which are Cahors's most traditional vineyards. (It is also known in the Loire Valley as Côt but is a marginal ingredient in the appellations of Anjou-Touraine.) It is also theoretically allowed, although not widely grown, in a wide range of other appellations in south-west France but it is in Cahors that it is best known, even if it travels under the name Auxerrois or Côt here. In Bordeaux today it is not common – growers complain of coulure, poor fruit set – but is mainly grown in such outlying parts of Bordeaux as Bourg, Blaye and Entre-Deux-Mers. It even has its very own synonym, Pressac, on the right bank of the Gironde. Malbec was originally a grape associated with south-west France but today is much more glorious in South America.īetter known then as Côt, it was the most commonly planted vine throughout south-west France, including Bordeaux, and was still widely grown there until the severe winter of 1956 killed many of the vines and more glamorous alternatives were replanted. Small bee with black and white stripes11/24/2023 In fact, if large black bees are causing property damage, you may need to find out ways to get rid of the black bumblebee-like insects. They are a different species of bee that some homeowners view as pests. However, black bees are not just black bumblebees. In many ways, the habits and characteristics of big black bees are like those of bumblebees. Bald-faced wasps measure 0.8” to 1” (2 – 2.5 cm) long.Share on Email Share on Pinterest Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Share on LinkedInīlack bees are about the size of a bumblebee and are also excellent pollinators. Wasp identification: Identify the bald-faced hornet by its black, smooth body, white facial patches, and three distinct white stripes on its abdomen’s tail end. The wasp nests consist of layered hexagonal combs covered in a gray, papery substance. The hanging papery nests are often found high up in trees, under roof overhangs, or in wall cavities. The “hornets” can be aggressive if the nest is threatened.īald-faced hornets build large paper nests that contain between 400 and 700 wasps. The black and white wasps are found throughout North America. Other names for the bald-faced hornet include white-faced hornet, white-tailed hornet, bald-faced aerial yellowjacket, and bald-faced wasp. Instead, the bald-faced wasp is a type of yellowjacket, despite its black coloration. Despite its common name, this black wasp isn’t a true hornet in the genus Vespa. The bald-faced hornet is a black and white wasp with black antennae, flattened black face with a white stripe, and black and white legs. Paper Wasps ( Polistinae )īald-Faced Hornet (Dolichovespula maculata) You will learn about common yellowjackets that tend to annoy people in the summer to smaller harmless wasps that look like flies or ants. Let’s look in more detail at how to identify various types of wasps. Types of Wasps and How to Identify Them (Pictures) For example, by encouraging parasitic wasps, you can help reduce caterpillar populations and the number of ants in your garden by feeding on larvae. Some species of parasitoid wasps and predator wasps can help reduce the number of common garden pests. Additionally, fig wasps ( Agaonidae) are crucial for pollinating figs. Some types of wasps store pollen and nectar in their bodies. For example, some species of wasps help pollinate several plant species. Generally, wasps are solitary insects, although some species are social creatures that nest together.Īlthough wasps have a reputation for aggressiveness, they are crucial insects in many ecosystems. Wasps range in size from the tiny chalcid wasp measuring 0.005” (0.139 mm) to the enormous female cicada killer wasp that can be 2” (5 cm) long. Wasps are flying winged insects in the order Hymenoptera and are related to bees and ants. For example, bees don’t have a recognizable thin waist like wasps. Bees usually have a fuzzy body that is more barrel-shaped than slender. The main differences between bees and wasps are their body shape and appearance. HornetsĬlose up pictures of a honey bee (left) and a wasp (right) In addition, many wasps have bi-colored legs, which is another way to identify a particular species. Depending on the species, wasp legs can be black, orange, or yellow. Other identifiable features of wasps are their six spindly legs. But some species are black, red, or brown. The easily identifiable feature of wasps is their thin waist between the thorax and abdomen. Most wasp species have smooth, slender bodies, making them easy to tell apart from bees. Wasp identification is possible by looking at their shape, size, color, and habits. Descriptions and pictures of different types of wasps will help to recognize these slender flying insects as they buzz from flower to flower in your garden. This article is a guide to identifying common species of wasps. In contrast, the black and yellow paper wasp ( Polistinae) is relatively docile and harmless. Similarly, yellowjackets ( Vespula maculifrons) tend to be aggressive wasps that sting unprovoked. For example, the bald-faced hornet ( Dolichovespula maculata) is a black and white wasp that can attack in swarms to defend a nest. Identifying species of wasps is essential because some wasps are more dangerous than others. Many species of wasps look like bees, and both wasps and bees are important pollinators that can cause a painful sting. Typically, wasps have a slender, smooth body with a narrow waist, a pair of membranous wings, and six spindly legs. Wasps are small, flying insects that usually have an identifiable black body with yellow bands. Even the best telescopes and best binoculars can't reveal all the subtle colors and intricate patterns that post-shoot editing using photo editing apps can. But with the help of the best cameras for astrophotography, we can see the much fainter glows of nebulas and galaxies. When we look up into the night sky with the naked eye, we can make out light sources of light from distant stars, see the bright light from the moon and possibly, on a clear night, see a nearby planet or two. Omnifocus 2 vs pro11/23/2023 OmniFocus lets you do this in the pro version, but the “saved search” is presented in a different way, as Perspectives. Even if I clone it or make it recurring in some way. I’ve struggled in the past with using OmniFocus for quick lists - it never quite felt right titling a Project “Shopping list ”. It’s like an excel sheet inside of a task app. The way you’re able to customize how you want to score or track your habit is a really nice feature, and the calendar view to give a high level insight is awesome. This is a really cool feature, and is better done than any other habit tracking app that I’ve ever used. With Location combined with Contexts I am able to remove duplicate Contexts, and filter by location Habits Things that Toodledo has, that OmniFocus is missing Location It will then hide everything from me that is not in the Work parent folder allowing me to only see the things that are relevant to my job. One of my favorite features of OmniFocus is the ability to click a top level folder (Work) and focus only on that. The ability to defer or due after the last item was checked off is awesome. OmniFocus does a much better job providing advanced options for recurring time frames. (Parallel, Sequential, Single Actions) Repeat options The ability to defer a task or project to a later date, and completely Project types This is something that OmniFocus does really well. However, there is no way to set due dates, contexts, locations, etc on each of the tasks created in an outline, and there is no way to export an outline to a folder or task with sub-tasks. Toodledo gets close to this with the Outline feature - this to me is really a project. Fundamentally, I really need to be able to define a project. I know there are many workarounds for creating projects in Toodledo - I’ve read the forums and was impressed with the creativity that users have when factoring solutions to this problem. As location is the sole reason I use nested contexts. I would actually be ok with forgoing nested contexts with the addition of a good location feature. This allows me to have added categorization for my projects - it is very clear what the project is in reference to. In my Personal folder, my sub-folders include: Finances, House, Health, Learning, Horses, Friends, Career. Within those folders I have sub-folders defining groupings of projects. For example, I have top level folders for Work, and for Personal. I have a lot of projects, and a lot of different ways that these projects are grouped. Things that OmniFocus has, that Toodledo is missing Nested folders OmniFocus 3 is a huge step forward for OmniFocus and will make it even harder to compete with. This time around, I was much more impressed.įeb 2019 EDIT OmniFocus has now replaced contexts with tags, which on mobile devices can have locations added to them for proper context alerting. Toodledo was just resurfaced to me - when I had first evaluated it, it was significantly lacking features that I relied upon. With storage space being so cheap these days it's no big deal to leave dead wood like Reminders laying around - as long as it doesn't have any security holes.I re-evaluate my task tracking system regularly. I imagine Apple doesn't even have a team working on it. It does so little, as far as I can tell it does not even integrate with Calendar. I love Apple, but Reminders seems like an ugly wart that should have been excised or replaced two or three iOS/macOS versions ago. Seeing what tools like OmniFocus are able to do also reminds me of how pathetic Apple's own Reminders app really is. Android support is good to have as well, and web support is always a backstop if there is no native app available for a supported operating system. I always shoot for Windows, Mac, Linux, and iOS compatibility. Cross platform access is a big deal for me. But for smaller projects, agile teams, personal/home projects, and to-do lists I've found Trello (and comparable tools that can scale to support team collaboration) are often good enough and at least worth trialing. If you're doing commercial construction, aerospace/military projects, medical systems, etc., I'm sure the bigger ticket tools are essential. The end result from a productivity and delivery standpoint doesn't appear to be much different and the lightweight tools seem to fit the agile approach somewhat better. After years of using complex and highly integrated tools for prioritizing, managing, and scheduling work, e.g., MS Project, Microsoft TFS, I've seen the pendulum swing back the other way towards very simple and low overhead Kanban oriented tools like whiteboards (with Post-Its as needed), Trello, and Slack. OmniFocus is undoubtedly a very powerful GTD oriented tool for folks who have to manage a lot of complexity in their daily lives. AuthorWrite something about yourself.
